Are millets actually better than rice and wheat?

They have real advantages but the claims have outrun the evidence somewhat. Millets like ragi, bajra, jowar and foxtail generally have more fibre, more micronutrients including iron and calcium in ragi's case, and a lower glycaemic response than polished white rice — which is a meaningful benefit for blood sugar. However, the preparation matters enormously: a finely ground millet flour in a refined form loses much of the advantage, and portion size still governs total carbohydrate. They are a sensible partial substitution rather than a free food, and variety across grains is more useful than switching entirely to one.

Preparation mattering is the catch. Finely milled millet flour behaves quite differently from the whole grain.

'Sensible partial substitution rather than a free food' is the balance. Portion still matters entirely.
