Farmers work hard all day. So why is half of my village diabetic?
There is a saying that farming keeps you fit. Maybe once. Now the tractor does the ploughing, the labour does the sowing, and I sit on the bike between the field and the mandi. At the last health camp in our village, 40 out of about 90 people who got tested had high sugar, and most of them did not know. My own father is diabetic. My uncle lost a toe. We eat well, that is the problem. Ghee, paranthas, lassi, sugar in the tea three times a day, and a bottle of Coke has become a normal thing with dinner. I am 36 and my fasting sugar was 112 at that camp. I am asking rural people here who have changed their food without giving up their whole way of eating. What did you do?
