How do you choose between daycare, a nanny and grandparents?

Each has real trade-offs and there is no universally right answer. Daycare offers structure, socialisation and cover when one staff member is ill, but more infections in the first year and fixed timings. A nanny offers flexibility and one-to-one attention but no backup when they are unavailable and less oversight. Grandparents offer trust and continuity but can involve differing views on discipline, feeding and screens, and it is worth being explicit about expectations early rather than letting resentment build. Whatever you choose, the quality of the individual caregiver matters more than the category.

The point about quality of the individual over the category is right. We had a wonderful nanny and a poor daycare.

Being explicit early with grandparents saved us. We waited a year and by then patterns had set.
