How do you talk to children about body safety without frightening them?

Use plain anatomical names from the start, which makes disclosure possible and is protective in itself. Frame it in terms of rules rather than fear: some parts are private, adults should not need to touch them except for health or hygiene and never in secret, and no one should ask you to keep secrets about your body. Teach that they can refuse unwanted physical affection, including from relatives, which is culturally difficult in Indian families but important. Make it an ongoing everyday conversation rather than one serious talk, and respond calmly if they ever tell you something.

'Never in secret' is the clearest rule I have found for a young child to actually remember.

Allowing a child to refuse a hug from a relative is genuinely hard in our families and it matters.
