How many rest days do you actually need each week?

For most people training three to five times a week, one to two full rest days is plenty, but the more useful question is how hard the sessions are rather than how many. Muscles recover in roughly 48 hours; connective tissue and the nervous system take longer, which is why joints complain before muscles do. Signs you need more rest: performance dropping across sessions, sleep worsening, resting heart rate creeping up, persistent low motivation. Active recovery — walking, easy cycling, light mobility — recovers better than complete inactivity for most people.

Active recovery over sitting still made a noticeable difference to how I felt the next day.

Resting heart rate creeping up was my only early warning. Everything else felt fine until it did not.
