How much sleep do children actually need at different ages?
Rough guidance: newborns 14 to 17 hours across the day, infants 12 to 16 including naps, toddlers 11 to 14, preschoolers 10 to 13, primary school children 9 to 12, and teenagers 8 to 10. Indian school timings are the practical problem — early buses combined with late family dinners and homework routinely compress this. Signs of insufficient sleep in children often look like behaviour problems rather than tiredness: irritability, poor concentration, hyperactivity. If bedtime is the only variable you can change, moving it earlier by twenty minutes at a time works better than a large shift.

The early school bus is the root cause for most urban Indian families and nobody is willing to address it.
Sleep deprivation presenting as hyperactivity rather than tiredness explains a great deal about our evenings.
