Is a home glucose monitor worth buying if you have prediabetes?

It can be useful for a bounded purpose rather than as a permanent habit. A few weeks of testing before and two hours after your usual meals shows which specific foods and portions produce the biggest response for you — and the answers are often surprising, since responses vary considerably between individuals. That knowledge is genuinely actionable. What is less useful is indefinite daily testing without a plan, which tends to produce anxiety rather than change. Discuss with a doctor before making changes based on readings, and remember that a single high number after an unusual meal is not a trend.

Bounded purpose rather than indefinite testing is good advice. I know people who test six times a day and change nothing.

Individual variation in food response is the reason generic glycaemic index lists only get you so far.
