Is it safe to send a child back to school once the fever is gone?

The common standard is 24 hours fever-free without paracetamol or ibuprofen, plus the child eating, drinking and behaving reasonably normally. Fever suppressed by medicine does not count. For specific illnesses the rules differ — chickenpox needs all lesions crusted, conjunctivitis and impetigo often need a day of treatment first, and a stomach bug needs 48 hours clear of vomiting or diarrhoea. Sending a child back a day early is how a class outbreak restarts, so the extra day is usually the cheaper option overall.
