My son is 24 and does not want to discuss his career with me. How do I stop lecturing?

My son finished his engineering and is working in a startup in Pune. Every time I ask about his work, his salary, or his plans, the conversation ends in five minutes. My wife says I do not ask, I interrogate. I come from a time where the father decided these things and I am aware that time is over. But I worry. Startups close down. He has no savings that I know of. I only want to help. Fathers of adult children, how did you learn to step back? Is there a way to stay involved without him feeling that he is being examined every Sunday on the phone?
