Not a parent yet. What do you wish someone had told you before you became one?

We are hoping to be parents within a year. I have read the books, I have watched my sister do it, I have babysat my nephew for a weekend and survived. But I suspect the real stuff is not in books. So, parents of this community, what do you wish someone had told you honestly before your first child? The good, the bad, the things nobody says at baby showers. I would especially like to hear from fathers, because my husband is nodding along to everything and I do not think he has any idea.
