What actually happens at a first appointment for a new diagnosis?
Usually more information than you can absorb, which is why preparation helps. Expect history taking, examination including blood pressure and weight, review of your test results, an explanation of what the condition means, and an initial plan that may include medication, lifestyle changes and further tests. Bring a written list of your medications and supplements, your family history, and your questions in priority order. Take someone with you if you can, since two people remember more than one. Ask for the plan in writing, ask what the next review is for, and ask what would warrant contacting them sooner.

Taking someone with you genuinely doubles what gets remembered. I retained almost nothing from my father's first appointment.
Asking what would warrant contacting them sooner is the question I never think to ask and always need later.
