What does it mean if your liver enzymes are slightly raised?

Mildly raised ALT or AST is a common incidental finding and most often reflects fatty liver in the Indian context. Other causes worth considering: alcohol, medications including some over-the-counter painkillers and supplements, viral hepatitis, thyroid dysfunction, and muscle injury which raises AST specifically after heavy exercise. The usual approach is to repeat the test after a few weeks, review alcohol, medicines and supplements, and check for hepatitis B and C plus an ultrasound. Persistently raised enzymes need proper evaluation rather than repeat monitoring indefinitely, since the aim is to identify fibrosis before it progresses.

AST rising after heavy exercise catches people out. Worth not testing the day after a hard session.

Ayurvedic and herbal supplements causing liver injury is a genuine and under-reported cause here.
