What is realistic screen time for children under five?

WHO guidance is no screen time under one year, no more than one hour a day for ages two to four, and less is better. In practice most Indian households exceed this, often because screens are used to enable eating, which is worth avoiding specifically since it disconnects children from hunger and fullness cues. What matters alongside quantity: co-viewing rather than solo watching, content that is slow-paced rather than rapidly cut, and no screens in the hour before bed. Being realistic rather than perfect helps — a consistent limit that you actually enforce beats an ideal one you abandon.

Co-viewing making a difference is useful. Not all screen time is equivalent.

Screens during meals is the habit worth breaking first. It took two difficult weeks and was worth it.
